| Serving Adult Students with Special Needs |
|
A person with special needs has a disability or impairment, mental or physical, which may be limiting one or more of major life activities, such as learning or working. Several pieces of legislation protect the rights of these individuals to ensure that they have equal opportunity at education or employment. However, the institution serving them must have proper documentation of the disability. If a person with a disability meets the academic and technical standards requisite to admission or participation in an adult education program, the person must be ensured equal educational opportunity.
This includes:
Program accessibility
Use of auxiliary aids and services
Academic accommodations
What is an accommodation?
“Accommodation” means any change to a classroom environment or task which allows a student to participate in the learning process. These may include use of equipment or changes in environments, procedures or attitudes. Whenever an accommodation is made for a student a form 504 must be completed, to document the action, providing an accommodation which essentially compromises the program outcomes is not required by the law.
At The English Center, the coordinator of these services is:
Ms. Leidia DiMascio, Head Counselor
